    Hi,

I am very interested in pursuing a masters in management. I have received offers from Warwick, Nottingham, Leeds, Manchester and Strathclyde. I am looking forward to the strathclyde MBM program as it gives me an opportunity to convert the same into MBA after 3 years of work experience. But I am a bit worried about the job scenario in UK and the new post visa terms. Although Strathclyde holds a very good reputation in terms of employment and is also triple accredited.
    Kindly assist.

      Hi,

I wanted to know which program is better in term of enjoyability and academics, MSc in International Business and Management or MBM at Strathclyde? I have heard MBS is placed higher due to its accessibility to employers and very good recognition. But Strathclyde is fairly good according to the FT rankings. I am interested to work in the field of management consulting and marketing after the course.

Please suggest as to which one is better to choose? I am really confused.

        Hi Shailja,

thank you for your question. My intuition is that both programs provide similar career options as they profit from the reputation and network of the same school. You could contact the school and ask for statistics for both programs.

        • Where did the graduates find a job after graduation?
        • What career services do they offer?
        • What is the specific difference in the content of the two programs.

Also, I can bring you in contact with a Strathclyde student if youlike.

        Best wishes
        Thomas

      Hi Shailja,

I understand your doubts and it is good that you reflect them BEFORE you decide for a school. At the same time, your open questions can serve you as a guide how you approach the schools to see which one convinces you and which one not.

Having said that, I suggest you to read my previous step-by-step approach first. Here you basically have a guideline how you clear the potential value of a specific school such as Strathclyde.

Furthermore, I can can bring you in contact with a MSc in Management student at Strathclyde if you like. I am sure he can get you some insight information. Just let me know if I shall ask him.

      Best wishes
      Thomas

        Hi Thomas,

Thanks very much for your reply indeed. I would be happy to get in touch with a student there,. I wanted to know is the scenario in UK really bad for international students to procure a job. As most of the deadlines of other schools have passed. I only have Nottingham and Strathclyde to consider now. Its a big investment and I am also looking forward to the return on investment. Kindly tell me will it be wise to make it. I am working as a Media Analyst currently for past six months and do not have much work experience. Also, are the companies only looking for experienced candidates or they also consider people with no experience. I have to make the deposit asap.

        Best,
        Shailja

          Hi Shailja,

I have just sent an email to him asking if I can send you his address. I will send you his email address then through the Private Message Board of this Forum.

Your lack of professional experience, by the way, is no problem, In contrast to MBA programs, MIM program expplicitly are for graduates without prof. experience.

As for the job opportunities in the UK you should really investigate in this before you decide. As I described earlier, the best way is to talk to the school career and admissions office, current and ex students, as well as companies. Herer are some lead questions:

          1. school career and admissions office

          • What's the legal situation for foreigner to work in the UK?
          • How many of your non-UK students get a job in the UK after graduation?
          • Where do they work (which companies)?
          • Which companies come to your campus to recruit?
          • Do you have specific experience with people from India (how successful are they in finding a Job in the UK later on)?

          2. Current students

          • How satisfied are you with the program so far?
          • How do you assess your job options after graduation?

          3. Ex students (alumni) => ask the school to bring you in touch with someone

          • How easy/difficult was it for you to get a job after graduation?
          • Would you recommend the program again?

          4. Employers => Make a list of your favorite firms and contact them

          • do you recruit form that school?
          • do you visit the campus from time to time?

These are all basic steps that you can do BEFORE you study and you will get valuabe information in two respects:

          1. The answers themselves will provide information for you: e.g. if the school says that no international student received a job after 3 months you may not want to study there
          2. The way they answer: e.g. if they don't have information on essential career data or if they are unable to bring you in contact with a student you may not want to consider the school.

Finally, I would open myself also to career options beyond the UK. Consider the value of the MIM in India or in other countries. The questions you need to ask are similar: e.g. contact your favorite companies in India ans ask them if they would perecive an MIM at that school as something positive; or ask the schools about their specific experience with people form India who find a job in India.

          Good luck!
          Thomas
