MSc then MBA or MBA directly

  • Posted by - muthutech08 - on 20 June 2012 - 12:06pm

    Hi ,

Im Muthukumar. I am a 2009 Computer Science Graduate from a well renowned institution in India. I have 2 years of full time work experience in IT. My goal is to do my MBA from one of the top universities. But since i do not have sufficient or relevant experience for an MBA , I thought it would be better to do a MiM(Masters in Mangement) or a MIB(Masters in International Business) first from one of the top european colleges -HEC Paris, IE Spain, Warwick -UK, so that i get an insight into management and then later pursue my MBA.

Do you think this is the right approach, as in should i work again for another 2 to 3 years and then try for the MBA directly or should i do the MIM first and then use it to boost my resume to get a good MBA Business school? Please Advise

      Hi Muthukumar,

with 2 years of work experience you can do a fulltime MBA at MANY institutions. With 3 years of work experience you can do an fulltime MBA at ANY institution. So, you CAN do an MBA from now on.

In my personal opinion, you also SHOULD do an MBA and not a Master in Management (MIM) simply because the MBA peer group of professionals will fit better to your profille and you will learn more knowledge and capabilities that matches your needs as a professional.

I also recommend you to read our article about differences between MBA and MIM.

      Best wishes

        Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the clarification. I have a score of 570 in my GMAT. Will this be enough to get a good MBA university

Also will the MBA from that university be enough to ensure a good placement once completed since MBA is an expensive course and i feel that there should be good returns both in a job and experience that i get from the programme.

          Hi Muthukumar,

there may be good schools that will accept you with a GMAT score of 570. But as a secret rule among MBA recruiters, you should have 600 as a minimum. Top schools have average scores of 650 to 700 - average means that you can have less but I recommend you to do it again and target 600 or more.

Your second question is too general to be answered. It depends on many factors such as

          • the school's reputation, network and career service
          • your profile
          • your target country, industry, and firms

I recommend you to clarify in advance:

          • in which area and country do you want to work directly after the MBA
          • in which industry
          • which tasks and function
          • which favorite employers

Then screen MBA programs through this (your personal) lens - programs that are afffordable for you

          • the school's website statistics (if published): where do the students work before and after; which companies recruit from that program?
          • contact the school's admissions office to bring you in touch with alumni: ask them how easy it was to get recruited
          • ask the admissions office about experience with students from your country
          • contact the career office and ask about typical employers that come to campus
          • if you have favorite employers you can also contact them and ask if they know or even recruit from a specific school

Now you have a step-by-step agenda. Follow that agenda one by one and you will gain experience about the MBA landscape - and finally find your program.

          best wishes
          Thomas
