Is Online MIM right for me?

  • Posted by - shrshweta - on 3 January 2011 - 5:24am

I have a 3-year Bachelor degree in Microbiology and wanted to pursue MBA in United States. Most of the universities do not accept 3-year undergraduate degree and I having difficulties to get admission here.

I might be living here in US for another two or three years and going back to my home country and in the meantime, I want to enroll for MIM as my second degree and hopefully get admission to US university if I stay here much longer.

As living in US and being a homemaker, I am thinking of joining ONLINE MIM at Durham Business School. Does it worth to invest my time & money?

Please do let me know if there is other universities that offer online courses.

Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

    Best regards,
    Shilpa

      Hi Shilpa,

I understand your idea, first, to make a postgraduate education in management (on top of your undergraduate education in Science), and, second, to do it through an online program as distance study.

Your first point makes absolutely sense to me if you do not plan to work in the lab in microbiology but instead want to work as project manager, product manager, marketing manager, entrepreneur etc. maybe even in a biology-related industry (e.g. biotechnology).

Your second point is more difficult to comment. The Durham Business School has a good reputation - at least it is in the Financial Times Master in Management Ranking and belongs to an old, traditional university which belongs to the Top-100 universities globally.

If the Online Master in Management pays off for you, however, may depend on many things, for example your pre-experience, your future plans etc. I suggest you to get in touch with Durham Business School directly, tell them about your situation and ask them (1) about the return of investment of their alumni and (2) what they recommend you. Let me know if I shall send you the personal contact of someone in the program department and I'll be happy to do so.

An alternative may also be to study a Master in Management in the US as a fulltime program. Our search engine allows you to search for programs:

      • with focus "General Management"
      • in the US
      • fullltime
      • without a bachelor in business/economics required

A good address may be, for instance, the Thunderbird School of Global Management and its Master in Global-Management.

I hope I could help you.

      Best wishes
      Thomas

        Thank you Thomas.

My first preference was to join local university here in US. As US university requires 16 years of schooling, and since my undergraduate is 3-year degree, I have 15 years of schooling. Thus, I am not able to admit to graduate school here.

With MIM degree, I will have master degree when I return to my home and even if I stay here much longer, I can get admission to graduate school later.

Ok, I understand. Makes sense for me.
